Caminito del Rey from Mijas Costa

The Caminito del Rey is one of Andalusia's most spectacular day trips: a narrow walkway clinging to the walls of a deep gorge a hundred metres above the riverbed. From Mijas Costa it makes an easy day out. This guide explains what to expect, how to book tickets and how to get there.

What is the Caminito del Rey?

The Caminito del Rey ('the King's little path') is a walkway through the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a dramatic gorge near El Chorro, about 60 kilometres north of Málaga. The path was built in the early twentieth century for workers at a hydroelectric plant and owes its name to a visit by King Alfonso XIII in 1921.

After years of decay, the old path was once considered one of the most dangerous in the world, the route was fully renovated and reopened in 2015 as a safe, modern wooden walkway. In places it hangs a hundred metres above the Guadalhorce river, between rock walls up to 700 metres high. The views are breathtaking.

The route: length, duration and difficulty

The full route is 7.7 kilometres: roughly 4.9 km of access paths and 2.9 km of walkway. Allow 3 to 4 hours in total, including waiting time. The walk is one-way, from the northern entrance (near Ardales) to the southern exit (near El Chorro). You cannot walk back, so plan your transport accordingly.

The route is not strenuous, almost flat, on wooden boards, but unsuitable for anyone with a fear of heights. There is a minimum age (usually 8) and wearing the provided helmet is compulsory. Pushchairs are not allowed. Wear sturdy shoes with grip.

Tickets & booking

Booking ahead is essential, especially in spring and autumn when it is busy. Tickets are booked on the official Caminito del Rey website. A standard entry ticket is relatively cheap; a guided tour typically costs around €25 to €35 per person.

If you would rather not drive and arrange parking, choose an organised day trip from the Costa del Sol. These bundle the coach, ticket and shuttle bus into one booking, convenient and stress-free. The Caminito regularly sells out days in advance, so book well ahead.

How to get there from Mijas Costa

By car: from Mijas Costa it is about 45 to 60 minutes to El Chorro or Ardales. Because the route is one-way, it is smartest to park at the southern entrance (El Chorro) and take the shuttle bus to the northern start, the shuttle runs every half hour and costs a few euros (cash).

By tour: many operators run day trips from Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Marbella, with return coach, ticket and shuttle included (typically €45 to €65 p.p.). By public transport is possible too: via Fuengirola and Málaga take the Renfe train to El Chorro station. More ideas are in our guide to day trips from Mijas Costa.

Practical tips

Arrive on time: you must check in at the entrance for your reserved time slot. Bring water, sun protection and a light jacket (it can be windy in the gorge). The best seasons are spring and autumn, summer can be hot, and winter slippery after rain (the route may close in bad weather).

Take photos along the way, but use selfie sticks sensibly and stay on the boards. There are toilets at the entrances, not en route. Afterwards, plan lunch in El Chorro or nearby Ardales, known for its reservoirs (los Embalses) where you can swim in summer.

Combine with other outings

The Caminito combines well with the area around El Chorro and Ardales: the turquoise reservoirs, the village of Ardales and the prehistoric Cueva de Ardales. An early start leaves room for a relaxed afternoon by the water.
