Calahonda, Mijas Costa

Calahonda is the immediate neighbour of Riviera del Sol, where Coral Mijas Stay is located, and to our mind one of the most practical spots on this coast. A large, relaxed residential area with wide beaches, every amenity and an international feel, less than five minutes' drive away. Here is what Calahonda has to offer.

Location and feel

Calahonda, officially Sitio de Calahonda, lies between Riviera del Sol and Cabopino, on the border of Mijas with Marbella. It is one of the largest urbanisations on the Costa del Sol, with a big international community of mainly British, Scandinavian and Northern European residents.

The feel is relaxed and residential: no mass tourism, but comfortable living and staying with everything to hand. From Riviera del Sol you are there in a few minutes, perfect for your daily shopping or an evening out.

The beaches

Calahonda has several pleasant beaches, including Playa de Calahonda and Royal Beach, with chiringuitos, sun-lounger hire and a calm, family-friendly atmosphere. The beaches are generally less crowded than those of the big resorts.

Just to the west lie the protected dunes of Cabopino (Dunas de Artola), a beautiful nature reserve with one of the loveliest, unspoilt beaches on the coast. Our tip: combine a beach morning in Calahonda with a walk through the dunes and lunch at the Cabopino marina.

Shops and amenities

Calahonda is well served. There are several shopping centres (such as Centro Comercial Calahonda and El Zoco) with supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, hairdressers and international shops. You will find British and Scandinavian products as easily as Spanish ones.

For anyone staying here that is handy: everything for daily life is close by, without needing to head to a bigger town. A hire car is nice for excursions but not needed for the shopping.

Eating and going out

Thanks to the international community, Calahonda's dining scene is surprisingly diverse: from Spanish tapas bars and fresh fish to Indian, Italian, Asian and British pubs. Many places are in and around the shopping centres and along the main road.

For the real Andalusian beach classics like espeto, stick to the chiringuitos by the sea. More dining inspiration for the area is in our guide to restaurants and tapas in La Cala de Mijas.

Golf, Cabopino and surroundings

Golfers are well placed in Calahonda: courses such as Calanova, La Siesta and Miraflores are a short distance away, alongside the many courses around the Costa del Sol. To the west, Calahonda borders Cabopino, with a charming marina and the protected Artola dunes.

To the east you are close to La Cala de Mijas and the Mijas golf courses. That makes Calahonda an ideal base: quiet living, yet everything from beach and golf to Marbella within reach.

Getting around

Calahonda sits right on the AP-7 and the A-7 coastal road, so you reach everything quickly: La Cala de Mijas and Riviera del Sol in a few minutes, Marbella in a quarter of an hour, Fuengirola in ten minutes and Málaga airport in about 25 minutes. Bus line M-220 stops here too.
