Riviera del Sol, the complete guide

Riviera del Sol is our home on the coast, and to our mind one of the nicest places to stay on the Costa del Sol. It sits right between La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda, with golf within walking distance and the beach around the corner. Not a tourist machine, but a relaxed residential area where you feel at home straight away. This is also where Coral Mijas Stay is located.

Location and feel

Riviera del Sol sits on the coast of the municipality of Mijas, midway between La Cala de Mijas (2 km to the west) and Calahonda (1.5 km to the east). The urbanisation runs from the sea up into the hills, so many homes have sea or mountain views. Málaga airport is about 25 minutes away, Marbella 20 and Fuengirola 10.

The feel is international but relaxed: Dutch, British, Scandinavian and Spanish families live side by side. Sheltered by the mountains to the north, the area enjoys more than 320 sunny days a year. Unsure whether to be on the coast or in the mountain village, read Mijas Pueblo versus Mijas Costa.

Golf: Miraflores, Calanova and more

For golfers this is a dream spot. Miraflores Golf Club is literally a hundred metres from Coral Mijas Residencial: a lovely 18-hole par-71 course, designed by Ken Smith, winding through olive trees and bougainvillea. Five minutes away is Calanova, and within a quarter of an hour you also have La Cala Resort, El Chaparral, Mijas Golf and Cabopino.

The mild climate makes golf possible all year, with the keenest rates and twilight deals out of high season. An overview of all the courses around La Cala is in our guide to golf in La Cala de Mijas.

Beach and coast

The nearest beach, Playa de Riviera, is reached via the underpass beneath the coastal road, with a chiringuito, sunbeds and a lifeguard in summer. The water is calm and clear, nice for families. To the west it merges seamlessly into the wider beach of La Cala.

The whole coastal strip is linked by the Senda Litoral, a promenade ideal for a morning lap or a sunset stroll. We like to walk it ourselves just before the sun drops, with the mountains of North Africa sometimes faint on the horizon.

Supermarkets and daily convenience

For daily life you have everything to hand. On the Avenida del Golf there is a Mercadona, plus smaller shops, a pharmacy, banks and a few restaurants. The centre of La Cala, two minutes away, adds more. The Wednesday market in La Cala is our favourite for fresh vegetables and olive oil; see our guide to markets in Mijas.

Handy for longer stays: there are English and Dutch-speaking doctors, dentists and services nearby. For big shopping, drive to Miramar in Fuengirola.

Coral Mijas Residencial

Coral Mijas Residencial is a new-build development in the middle of Riviera del Sol, a hundred metres from Miraflores Golf and a six-minute walk from La Cala beach. It combines clean, contemporary architecture with Mediterranean touches: lots of light, generous terraces and views over the golf course or the sea, with communal pools and underground parking.

Coral Mijas Stay is the penthouse on the top floor: two bedrooms, a private 42 m² rooftop terrace with sea views, and everything within walking or short driving distance. It opens mid Q1 2028. To find the best place to stay in the area, read our guide holidays in Mijas: where to stay.

Getting around

Riviera del Sol sits right on the AP-7; exit 214 brings you straight in. From Málaga airport you are here in about 25 minutes. The A-7 coastal road is a scenic alternative by the sea. For daily life you need no car: much is within walking distance and bus line M-220 connects you with Fuengirola and Marbella.

From Fuengirola you take the train to Málaga. All the options in one place are in our guide on getting from Málaga airport to Mijas Costa.

Living and buying in the area

Riviera del Sol has been popular with international buyers for years, thanks to the mix of golf, beach and the short hop to the airport. The area is often still better priced than comparable spots in Marbella or Benalmádena, which makes it attractive for both personal use and rentals.
