Markets in Mijas: which day and which place

The weekly markets (mercadillos) are part of the best of local life on the Costa del Sol. But which market is on which day, and where? We like to go ourselves and have lined up the markets of Mijas and the surrounding area, with practical tips to grab a bargain and avoid parking stress.

Quick overview: which market, which day

The municipality of Mijas has two large weekly markets, plus permanent craft stalls in the mountain village. In short: La Cala de Mijas on Wednesday morning and Las Lagunas on Saturday morning. In nearby Fuengirola the big market is on Tuesday, with a smaller one on Saturday.

Most markets run from about 9:00 to 14:00. Come early for the best choice and the fewest crowds. Below we explain each one.

La Cala de Mijas, Wednesday

The most popular market on this coast is the Wednesday market in La Cala de Mijas, on the open ground by the village centre. With more than a hundred stalls full of fruit and vegetables, local olive oil, cheese, leather goods, clothing, ceramics and second-hand items, it is a weekly social highlight where the international community comes together.

From Coral Mijas Stay in Riviera del Sol you are there in no time. Our tip: park higher up at the La Cala Resort or by the church and walk down, as parking near the market is tricky on Wednesdays. Read more about the village in our guide to La Cala de Mijas.

Las Lagunas, Saturday

The municipality's largest market is the Saturday market in Las Lagunas, the inland part of Mijas next to Fuengirola, usually on the fairground (recinto ferial). This market is bigger and more local than La Cala's, with many stalls for clothing, household goods, plants and fresh produce at keen prices.

This is more a market for residents than tourists, and that is exactly why it is worth it if you want to feel the real rhythm of Mijas. Reckon on a fifteen-minute drive from the coast.

Mijas Pueblo: craft stalls

Mijas Pueblo has no classic weekly market, but it does have permanent, mainly craft and tourist stalls around the Plaza Virgen de la Peña and in the streets. Here you find ceramics, leatherwork, jewellery and souvenirs, ideal to combine with a walk through the white village.

Combine a visit with the viewpoints and the museums. Everything about it is in our guide to Mijas Pueblo.

Markets nearby: Fuengirola

Just outside the municipality, in the neighbouring town of Fuengirola, the big weekly market is on Tuesday at the recinto ferial, one of the largest on the coast. On Saturday there is a smaller market with a flea market (mercadillo de segunda mano) alongside, fun for collectors and bargain hunters.

Fuengirola is about ten minutes from Mijas Costa. Read more about the town in our guide to Fuengirola.

Practical market tips

Come early (around 9:00) for the best produce and before it gets busy and hot. Bring cash and small change, as not every stall takes cards. Gentle haggling is fine for clothing and leather, but not for fresh produce. Your own bag or basket is handy.

If you stay in an apartment with a kitchen, like at Coral Mijas Stay, the market is ideal for stocking up on fresh food to cook yourself. Inspiration is in our guide to food and dining in Mijas.
