Fuengirola: our complete guide

Fuengirola is, for us, the lively city cousin of quiet Mijas Costa. Less than ten minutes away you will find one of the longest promenades on the coast, a genuine medieval castle, a beautiful zoo and a buzzing centre full of terraces. In this guide we share our favourite spots and practical tips for a great day in Fuengirola.

Why we recommend Fuengirola

We happily send our guests to Fuengirola when they want a bit more buzz than La Cala offers. The town combines a long sandy coast with a friendly, mostly pedestrian centre, and everything is close together. You can easily fill a whole day with beach, culture and shopping, or simply go for an evening meal and a stroll.

Our tip: take the train. Fuengirola is the end of the coastal line from Málaga, so you can forget about parking stress. If you prefer a quieter coastal village as a base, read our guide to La Cala de Mijas.

Sohail Castle

On the west side of town, on a hill above the mouth of the Fuengirola river, stands Castillo Sohail. The castle has Moorish roots and was destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries; its present form dates largely from the eighteenth century. The walk around the walls with views over sea and town is free and, to our mind, one of the loveliest spots on the whole coast.

In summer the castle is the stage for the Castillo Sohail festival, with concerts under the stars. Combine a visit with a walk along the adjacent river mouth, where you often spot flamingos and other birds.

Beach and the long promenade

Fuengirola has kilometres of wide sandy beaches with a continuous promenade, the Paseo Marítimo, among the longest on the Costa del Sol. You can walk, cycle or skate endlessly, with chiringuitos everywhere for an espeto or a cold drink. The beaches hold the Blue Flag and, thanks to the gentle slope, are great for families.

Honestly, in July and August it gets busy and crowded. If you want calm, come in spring or autumn or early in the day. Our favourite moments are the sunsets from the promenade, mountains at your back and the sea turning from gold to deep orange.

Bioparc Fuengirola

Bioparc Fuengirola is a modern zoo in the middle of town, designed around the principle of natural habitats rather than traditional cages. Gorillas, tigers, lemurs and crocodiles live in lush, recreated tropical settings. It is compact but beautifully designed, and to us one of the best family outings in the region.

Allow two to three hours. Our tip: go in the morning when the animals are more active and the sun is not at its hottest. More family ideas are in our guide La Cala de Mijas with kids.

Centre, marina and market

The heart of Fuengirola is the Plaza de la Constitución with its white church and surrounding terraces. From there you wander through shopping streets to the marina (Puerto Deportivo), where the bars and restaurants fill up in the evening. The international atmosphere is tangible here: you hear English and Finnish as often as Spanish.

Love markets? The big weekly market is on Tuesday at the Recinto Ferial, with a smaller version and a flea market on Saturday. We like to go for sun-ripened vegetables, olives and a good taste of local life.

How to get there from Mijas Costa
