La Cala de Mijas is one of the most family-friendly spots on the Costa del Sol. A safe, gently sloping beach, a car-free promenade, short distances and plenty of activities make it ideal for a holiday with children. In this guide you will find the best beach fun, days out, bad-weather tips and practical information for parents.

La Cala is compact and easy to navigate: beach, restaurants, shops and play areas are all within walking distance. The wide, tiled promenade (Paseo Marítimo) is fully accessible for pushchairs and car-free, so children can safely cycle, scoot or run along the sea.
From a spacious apartment with a kitchen, like the Coral Mijas Stay penthouse in Riviera del Sol, you do not need a car for everyday life: La Cala beach is a 6-minute walk away. That cuts stress and gives children the freedom to explore within the village.
Playa de La Cala holds the Blue Flag and slopes gently, making it shallow and safe for young children. In high season a lifeguard service operates. Along the beach you will find showers, toilets, sun loungers and parasols for hire, and chiringuitos for an ice cream or lunch without walking far.
The sheltered bay is calm enough for paddling and swimming. Older children can hire a kayak, pedalo or stand-up paddleboard at the beach hire point. Bring shade (a parasol or beach tent) and plan beach time for the morning or late afternoon, especially in July and August.
There is plenty to do around La Cala. Nearby Fuengirola (10 min.) is home to Bioparc Fuengirola, a modern zoo with natural habitats, a big hit with children. Also close by: a water park, mini golf, and the medieval Castillo Sohail. In the white mountain village of Mijas Pueblo (15 min.), the donkey taxis and viewpoints are an experience.
For action lovers: in summer there are banana-boat and parasailing trips, and you can hire a jet ski at Calahonda. For a memorable family day, the Caminito del Rey (45 min. drive) is suitable for children from around age 8. Plenty of ideas are also in our guide to day trips from Mijas Costa.
Even though the sun shines more than 300 days a year, a less sunny day can always happen. The Bioparc and the water park are partly covered or fine on cloudy days. In Fuengirola and Málaga you will find cinemas, a large shopping centre (Miramar) and indoor play areas for young children.
Málaga city (30 min.) offers child-friendly museums such as the interactive science centre, and the Picasso Museum runs family tours. An apartment with a kitchen and smart TV also makes a quiet afternoon indoors enjoyable, bake something together with fresh produce from the Wednesday market.
The promenade is full of child-friendly addresses with high chairs, children's menus and terraces near play areas. Ice-cream parlours, crêpes and pizza are everywhere within reach. Spaniards naturally bring children along when dining out, even late in the evening, no one blinks at a child playing at dinner.
Tip: introduce children to tapas, so everyone finds something they like. A full selection of eateries is in our guide to restaurants & tapas in La Cala de Mijas.
The best months for a family holiday are May-June and September-October: warm enough to swim, but less busy and hot than July-August. The village has a modern health centre (Centro de Salud), pharmacies and supermarkets such as Mercadona and Dia for nappies, baby food and groceries.
Take sun protection seriously: high factor, hats and plenty of water. The promenade is perfect for pushchairs. For outings beyond the village, a hire car with a child seat is handy. Remember that shops often take a siesta (around 14:00-17:00), plan shopping around it.
Yes. Playa de La Cala holds the Blue Flag, slopes gently (shallow) and has a lifeguard service in high season, with showers and facilities within walking distance.
Plenty: Bioparc Fuengirola, a water park, mini golf, Sohail Castle, donkey taxis in Mijas Pueblo, and water sports such as kayaking and pedalos. For older children the Caminito del Rey is recommended.
