A beach day in La Cala de Mijas revolves around the chiringuitos: the beach restaurants where you eat fresh fish with your feet in the sand. There are also relaxed beach clubs with sunbeds and music. We explain the difference and share our tips for the perfect beach day, a six-minute walk from Coral Mijas Stay.

The chiringuito is the heart of Andalusian beach life: an informal beach restaurant where you can settle in all day for a drink, a lunch or a long dinner with a sea view. Along the La Cala promenade you find several, from simple and authentic to a bit smarter.
The vibe is relaxed and there is no need to dress up. For the wider dining scene, see our guide to restaurants and tapas in La Cala.
What you really must try at a chiringuito is the espeto de sardinas: sardines on a cane, grilled over glowing olive wood in an old fishing boat full of sand. It is the iconic beach taste of the Costa del Sol, and nowhere better than fresh off the embers.
Order a cold tinto de verano or a local beer with it. Other classics: fried fish (pescaíto), grilled squid and a fritura to share.
Besides the classic chiringuitos there are beach clubs where you hire a sunbed and parasol (often around €8 per set per day), sometimes with a pool, music or DJs in high season. Ideal if you want a full, comfortable day by the sea, with service right to your sunbed.
La Cala beach slopes gently and is therefore great for families too; read our guide La Cala de Mijas with kids.
For a sunbed, come early in high season, as the best spots go quickly. Most chiringuitos are open daily from spring to autumn; in winter with reduced hours. Booking for dinner with a sea view is wise in summer.
