Mijas Costa del Sol weather and the best time to visit

Mijas Costa has one of the mildest climates in Europe, with more than three hundred sunny days a year. But when is the truly best time to come? It depends on what you are after. In this guide we share what to expect in temperature, sea water and crowds each season, plus our honest preferences by type of holiday.

The climate of Mijas Costa

The Mijas coast enjoys a subtropical Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and mild, sunny winters. The average annual temperature is around 18 °C, and even in winter the sun shines often. The Sierra de Mijas behind the coast shelters it from cold northerly winds, creating a pleasant microclimate.

Rain falls mainly between November and March, and even then it is limited and comes in short showers. The summer is practically dry. In short: whenever you come, the chance of sunshine is high. The real question is how warm you want it and whether you want to swim in the sea.

Weather in La Cala de Mijas, Mijas Pueblo and the coast

Across Mijas Costa del Sol the weather is very consistent: the coastal spots like La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda share the same mild, sea-moderated climate, with more than 320 sunny days a year. Daytime ranges run from around 16-18 °C in winter to 28-34 °C in high summer, cooled by a sea breeze.

The one real difference is altitude. Mijas Pueblo, at 428 metres, is typically a few degrees cooler than the coast, especially in the early morning and evening, and can catch a cloud when the beach is in full sun. Even in summer it is worth taking a light layer for the village. So if you search for La Cala de Mijas weather or Mijas Pueblo weather, expect coastal figures at sea level and slightly fresher, breezier conditions up in the white village.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is, to our mind, one of the loveliest periods. Nature is green, the blossom is fragrant and temperatures climb from pleasant (around 18 °C in March) to delightful (24 °C in May). Perfect for hiking in the Sierra de Mijas, golf and sitting on terraces.

Honestly, the sea is still fresh in spring (around 16 to 18 °C), so this is more a season for active holidays than long beach days. Semana Santa (Easter) is a busy and atmospheric time with processions in the villages.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is high season: warm, sunny and buzzing. Daytime temperatures range between 28 and 34 °C, cooled by a sea breeze. The beach, the promenade and the restaurants run at full tilt, and in late July you can catch the Feria de La Cala.

Our advice: embrace the Spanish rhythm. Go to the beach early or late, take a siesta in the midday heat and eat late in the evening like the locals. Book accommodation and popular activities well ahead, as this is the busiest time of year.

Autumn (September to November)

If you ask us for the single best time to travel, we often say September and October. The summer crowds are gone, temperatures are still summery (24 to 28 °C) and, most importantly, the sea is at its warmest (around 22 to 23 °C) because it has warmed up all summer. Ideal for long beach days without the heat and crowds of August.

November becomes quieter and cooler, with the occasional shower, but still plenty of sunny days. A lovely time for those seeking calm and lower prices.

Winter (December to February)

Winter on the Costa del Sol is remarkably mild. By day it is often 16 to 18 °C and sunny, cooling down at night. It is not swimming weather (the sea drops to around 15 °C), but it is ideal for golf, hiking, culture and long lunches on a sunny terrace. Many northern Europeans overwinter here for exactly this reason.

Bear in mind that some beach bars and shops keep reduced hours. Christmas and Epiphany (6 January) are celebrated with charm, with lights and parades in the villages.

When is the best time for you?

In short, based on what we advise our guests: beach lovers are best off in June, September or October (warm water, fewer crowds than August). Golfers and hikers do well in spring, autumn and even winter, when it is not too hot. Those after the buzz and the ferias come in July and August. Calm and low prices are found from November to March.
