Mijas in winter: winter sun on the Costa del Sol

Many people think of summer when they picture the Costa del Sol, but we actually love Mijas in winter. The temperatures are mild, the sun shines often, and without the high-season crowds everything feels a little more relaxed. Here is what to expect if you come between November and March.

The weather in winter

Winter on the Costa del Sol is mild. During the day the mercury often climbs to around 16 to 19 degrees, and on a sunny afternoon you can sit on a terrace in a T-shirt. The evenings and mornings are fresh, so bring a jumper and a jacket. It rains now and then, but most days are clear and blue.

A detailed month-by-month breakdown is in our weather guide for Mijas.

What to do in winter

Winter is ideal for everything that is too hot in summer. Wander around the white village of Mijas Pueblo without breaking a sweat, head into the mountains, or take long coastal walks along the Senda Litoral. Golfers come precisely in these months, because the courses are quiet and the temperature is perfect.

Sunbathing on the beach is usually too fresh, but for a walk by the sea and a long lunch at a chiringuito it is lovely.

Almond blossom and winter fiestas

In late January and February the slopes around Mijas turn white and pink with almond blossom, one of the loveliest times of year to walk. In December and early January the village is festively decorated, with nativity scenes and, on 5 January, the Three Kings parade, the big celebration for Spanish children.

It is a side of Mijas that most summer guests never see.

Overwintering in Mijas

There is a reason many Northern Europeans spend the whole winter on this coast. With the mild temperatures, the sun and the relaxed pace it is a wonderful place to escape the dark months. Outside high season accommodation is also quieter and often better value.
