Paddleboarding and kayaking

For us the loveliest way to see the coast: paddling along the coves on a SUP board or in a kayak. The water at La Cala de Mijas is usually calm, perfect for beginners. At several beach bars you can hire a board by the hour, and in summer guided trips are organised along the coastline.

Early in the morning the water is at its smoothest and it is still quiet. A great way to start your day.

Jet ski and boat trips

If you want more speed, you can hire a jet ski from the beaches and marinas or book a boat trip. Trips leave from Puerto Cabopino and the harbours of Fuengirola and Benalmádena, and with a bit of luck you will spot dolphins. For a jet ski you usually do not need a licence if you go with an instructor.

Book ahead in high season, as the popular times fill up fast.

Diving and snorkelling

There is more to see underwater along this coast than you might think. There is life around the rocks at Calahonda and Cabopino, and there are dive schools offering courses and guided dives, also for those who have never worn a tank. For snorkelling all you need is a mask and a rocky stretch of beach.

The water is clearest and warmest from June to October.

On the water with kids

If you are travelling as a family, there is plenty of water fun without heading out to the open sea. The Aqua Mijas water park in Fuengirola has slides for all ages, and most beaches shelve gently and are safe for little ones.

More ideas for a day with kids are in our guide La Cala de Mijas with kids.
