Virgen del Carmen in La Cala de Mijas

Every year on 16 July, La Cala de Mijas honours the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen and sailors. It is one of the most moving evenings of the summer: the image of the Virgin is carried on shoulders through the village down to the sea, with the whole village walking along. This guide explains what happens, when it starts and how to make the most of it as a visitor.

What is the Virgen del Carmen?

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, celebrated along the whole Spanish coast on 16 July. In fishing villages like La Cala de Mijas it is one of the most important days of the year: a tribute to the sea that fed the village for centuries.

La Cala began life as a fishing village, and you feel those roots most strongly on this evening. To learn how the village came to be, read our history of La Cala de Mijas.

When is it in 2026?

The Virgen del Carmen falls on the same date every year: 16 July. In 2026 that is a Thursday. The Mass in the church of Santa Teresa usually begins around 8:00 PM, after which the procession sets off at about 8:30 PM. Check the exact times shortly beforehand with the Ayuntamiento de Mijas, as they can vary slightly from year to year.

It is high summer on the Costa del Sol: warm evenings and long, light days. An ideal moment to combine the procession with a day on the beach.

The procession down to the sea

After the Mass, the bearers lift the image of the Virgen del Carmen onto their shoulders and the procession moves through the streets of La Cala towards the coast, accompanied by the Mijas music band and a dance group. Applause rings out along the route, and petals are thrown from balconies.

The high point is the moment the Virgin reaches the sea. In many years the image is even carried a little way into the water or onto a boat, as a blessing for the fishermen and a safe sailing season. It is a heartfelt, genuinely local moment, not a tourist show.

The underwater statue and the divers

A special detail of La Cala: just off the coast, a small statue of the Virgen del Carmen rests on the seabed. On the feast day, local divers bring this underwater image up to the surface, so that the two Virgins symbolically meet. It is a unique custom you will not find at every coastal procession.

That underwater statue makes La Cala one of the more special places to experience the Virgen del Carmen. Arrive on the promenade in good time to find a good spot.

Practical tips

The celebration is public and free. It gets busy on and around the promenade, so come well before 8:00 PM and expect limited parking. Walk or take the bus if you can; anyone staying in La Cala or Riviera del Sol does not need a car at all.

Bring something to drink and dress lightly; the evenings are warm. If you are coming with children, the start of the evening is the calmest, see also La Cala de Mijas with kids.

More summer festivals in La Cala

The Virgen del Carmen is one of the highlights of a summer full of celebrations. Earlier, on the night of 23 June, the beaches light up for the Noche de San Juan, and in late July the great Feria de La Cala de Mijas takes over the village (22 to 27 July in 2026).

Between the festivals you eat and drink in the village. Our guide to restaurants and tapas in La Cala points you to the best spots.
